How it's calculated

What you keep per sale is the price minus product cost, shipping and fees. It's the money each sale leaves before advertising, salaries and rent.

Margin is that number divided by the price. If you sell at $20,000 and keep $8,400, your margin is 42%.

The most you can spend per sale equals what you keep: if winning a sale costs more than that in ads, you lose money even while selling.

Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your margin. With a 42% margin you need a ROAS of at least 2.4: every dollar in ads has to bring back 2.4 in sales just to break even. Anything above that is profit.

Frequently asked questions

What is ROAS?

Return on ad spend: sales that came from your ads divided by what you spent. A ROAS of 4 means every dollar spent brought back 4 in sales.

Is a ROAS of 3 good?

It depends on your margin. With a 50% margin, break-even ROAS is 2 and a ROAS of 3 is profitable. With a 25% margin, break-even is 4 and a ROAS of 3 loses money. There's no good ROAS in general, only a good ROAS for your business.

Should I include taxes?

If you charge sales tax or VAT separately, enter the price without it, because that tax isn't yours. Otherwise enter the final price the customer pays.

Which costs are left out?

Salaries, rent, tools and other fixed costs. This calculator measures what each sale leaves. To know whether the business as a whole makes money, subtract the month's fixed costs.
